Production - Scene 2

The second scene in our script and planning outline was the bathroom scene. This was an extremely important scene because we wanted to create a foreshadowing effect of the shadow figure and show the true oblivious of our main character.

This scene was extremely hard to produce....Our first issue was the fact that Santiago's bathroom had recently been under construction and so he did not have a mirror...bizarre I know! This is originally a huge issue because the angle that I was being filmed at had originally been planned to be filmed through the mirror and then jump to a different angle to show the bathtub where the shadow figure, played by Sam, was lurking. Because of the lack of bathroom mirror we had to get creative with how we could hold the phone in order to film.

Here is a picture that was taken as a reference photo to where the phone should be held for this scene to try and best replicate where a mirror would capture from the side:

While this is CERTINALY not the best picture of me or Sam it was the perfect angle for where the camera had to be set up in order to catch this shot. After taking this picture Santiago was able to hold the phone at this angle for the rest of the scene and it turned out exactly how we had hoped!

Now that we had figured out how to film the from the side view, the next bathroom shot to tackle was the front facing mirror one. This is the shot that gave us the most trouble because I had to took at the back camera of my phone and pretend it was a mirror. Usually in a mirror I would be able to see what I looked like and where I was looking but it was certainly a challenge not being able to see either one of those things!! I had to do a few practice takes where both Sam and Santiago had to tell me what looked natural of someone washing her face in the morning and what didn't.

This is the mirror scene that we finally decided on:

Once the main mirror scene had been filmed, we jumped back to the side view to show Lily continuing to get ready in the bathroom now with the shadow figure present behind the shower curtain. Sam was dressed in all black to insinuate this character and his mannerisms.

We had now filmed  the final scenes in the bathroom, we had to film a tracking scene that took the watchers from the bathroom with the shadow figure to the kitchen. Surprisingly this scene was super easy to film and only took us 1 try. Which was CRAZY compared to the amount of tries we had to take for every other scene so far. I think it was because we started to get into the flow of things and communicate better as a group and all follow our roles to produce a better shots. Communication was extremely helpful because if I did not like a particular shot or one of my group members did not think something I did looked good or made sense, open communication made the trial and error process so much easier.

Here is the tracking scene of Lily moving from the bathroom with the shadow figure to the kitchen:
